AI Alps
Europe and the Alpine Space are undergoing profound changes driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI
is a groundbreaking innovation, and affects not only the industry sector but society as a whole. The
EC has prioritized AI, aiming to establish Europe as a leading continent in this field. Central to this
approach are AI Factories and AI Testing and Experimentation Facilities, which bring together actors
from research, industry, policy, and civil society to a broader European framework: AI ecosystems.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a central role in the European industry and –
especially- the industry in the Alpine Space. They employ millions of workers, generate substantial
economic output and surplus, as well as are major contributors to economic prosperity and social
well-being. However, many SMEs are not yet prepared for the technological shifts that AI entails. Less
than 15% of SMEs make use of AI. This lack of readiness risks weakening the SMEs’ competitiveness
and, in the worst case, threatens their economic survival, including dramatic impacts for society and
politics: unemployment, loss of purchasing power, decline in the national budget, economic
recession. This project aims to prepare SMEs in the Alpine Space for the industrial use AI. It focuses
on the development of a transnational AI innovation ecosystem in the Alps that connects SMEs with
relevant stakeholders and enables the transnational exchange of knowledge and expertise, services,
technology, innovation, and support. This involves building transnational networks of AI (Knowledge)
Factories and AI Teaching and Education Facilities that foster transnational cooperation, exchange,
and collaborative creation of value. The objective is to support the development of an AI-enabled
manufacturing landscape in the ASP that is regionally rooted, socially responsible, and economically
resilient.
