About

Fondazione Cineteca Italiana was created in Milan in 1947. Cineteca is recognized as a “private foundation of public interest” and a “deposit regional law”. Active in the fields of conservation, restoration and promotion of films, Cineteca is among 5 film libraries supported by the national film fund (Ministry of Culture). Cineteca is designated by the Regional authority as “legal regional deposit” of audiovisual materials produced in the area and a FIAF member (Fédération Intérnationale des des Archives du Film) since 1948. Through 3 directly-managed exhibition theaters (Spazio MEET-Ex cinema Oberdan, Area Metropolis 2.0, which is part of the Europa Cinemas network, and MIC Theatre), MIC-Museo Interattivo del Cinema (Interactive Film Museum) and a rich Virtual Archive, Cineteca counts around 130.000 spectators a year. Member of ECFA (European Children’s Film association) and AFIC (national film festival association).
Cineteca manages 3 film theatres in Milan and in the neighborhood which exhibit heritage and feature contemporary films. Before the Covid-19 outbreak, in 2018 “Area Metropolis 2.0” had exhibited 138 EU films, for 1169 screenings and 30.640 admissions and, in; 2019, 140 EU films, for 1152 screenings and 34.013 admissions. Concerning “Spazio MEET-Ex cinema Oberdan” in 2018 out of 465 contemporary and classic features and short films, 313 were EU films from 18 EU countries, and 169 of them were non-national EU films, representing 36% of the whole programme and 53% of all EU films, while in 2019, before the closing of the cinema for renovation (the cinema has been reopened in may 2021) out of 166 contemporary and classic features and short films, 86 were EU films from 16 EU countries, and 57 of them were non-national EU films, representing 34% of the whole programme and 66% of all EU films. Theatres assure the presence of Cineteca on the territories and highlights its role as a cultural and commercial actor in film industry.
ICT are also employed in our valorization activity: Cineteca’s MIC-Museo Interattivo del cinema (Interactive Film Museum) is a space in which film heritage is promoted through ICT and digital tools making the museum’s collection more accessible and enjoyable, especially for younger audiences. MIC is being completely renewed with more spaces dedicated to ICT (virtual reality, augmented reality, gaming). The Virtual Archive, located in the foundations of the building, is a space in which the film collection of Cineteca is accessible by VR advanced glasses and headphones.
Since December 2019 the new Cineteca’s website (www.cinetecamilano.it) also includes an online SVOD service with 210.309 registered users from 6 EU and non-EU countries, an average of 18k hits per week, with a catalogue of around 850 films, 750 of them heritage films restored and digitized by the MIC restoration Lab of Cineteca and 100 of them are contemporary feature films (90% of them from EU). Since june 2020, the platform also offers the platform also offers paid content (TVOD) licensed by right-holders. The platform has generated an income of around € 28k right now.
Concerning promotional and educational activities, in 2019 Cineteca’s yearlong activities (screenings, seminars, workshops, debates, camps, etc.) involved around 25.000 students from 100 schools. Since 2004 Cineteca curates “Piccolo Grande Cinema-Cineteca Milano Festival” a festival dedicated to young audiences and families. Thanks to its theatres, digitisation labs and the SVOD platform Cineteca manages the whole value-chain for valorization of film heritage and promotion of contemporary EU arthouse films.
