About

The Municipality of Jesolo (27,000 inhabitants) is a touristic coastal town on the Northern shores of the Adriatic sea, in the Veneto Region, just about 30km far from Venice. Being one of the most popular touristic destinations in Italy, Jesolo attracts millions of tourists every year, particularly for its sandy beaches and leisure offer.
Despite its coastal characterisation, the city is connected to the wider Alpine Space area both for appealing to a vast pool of users from Germany, Austria and Switzerland (these are the three main countries of origin of foreign tourists coming to Jesolo), and for a few strategic assets:
– Jesolo sits along the path of the European cycleway Munich-Venice, an ambitious project of slow and sustainable tourism that poses challenges regarding the governance of the various sections but also plenty of opportunities for the appreciation of cultural and natural resources and landscapes;
– the river basins that shape the Northern-Italian plain and intermittently pose a threat because of the risk of flooding. In particular, the river Piave has a direct impact on the phenomenon of coastal erosion that menaces both Jesolo’s natural environment and its tourism industry: along the years, rivers across Europe has started carrying less and less sedimentation materials towards the coast and, while the sea erodes the coastline, there is no sufficient material (sand) for renewal. This is one of the city’s main priorities.
