Gianluca Maracchini is an Assistant professor (Tenure-Track) in Architectural Engineering (CEAR-08/A) at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering (DICAM) at the University of Trento (UNITN). At DICAM, he is responsible for international students and is a member of the Commission of Teaching Area (Commissione di Area Didattica) and the Commission for L7 Regulation revision (Commissione revisione regolamento L-7) for the course of Civil Engineering. He is also an active member of the PhD program in Civil Engineering and is responsible for incoming Visiting professors.
His research activity is mainly focused on the optimization of the architectural project for both new and existing buildings, considering (i) the design feasibility of the project and its adequacy to the essential requirements (considering constructive, functional, typological, and formal aspects), and (ii) the critical evaluation of both traditional and innovative construction techniques for their translation in terms of design (also computer-aided) and productive processes. The activities include the design, development, and optimization of traditional and innovative materials, components, and construction systems for the construction of new buildings and the conservation, adaptation, and reuse of existing ones (also considering the effects of the project on different dimensional scales such as component scale, building scale, urban scale), and the development of methods, tools, and techniques to be used in the different phases of the architectural project. The activities follow an integrated, holistic approach addressing building performance (thermal, energy, structural, durability), users’ needs, and sustainability aspects (social, economic, and environmental) through experimental and numerical activities.
He participated in different European projects also financed under the HORIZON 2020 and LIFE actions (e.g. EU_EACEA TimberEDU, H2020 ARV, H2020 RIBuild, H2020 BIM-SPEED, LIFE SUPERHERO) and further projects financed at national or international level (e.g. CARITRO “Rigenerazione Urbana a prova di Clima”, DPC_RELUIS_2022_2024, RELUIS 2024-2026, XLAM SU.PRE.MO., POR FESR Marche 2014/2020 “HOME DONE” and the RELUIS 2014-2017 CARTIS project), also with coordination and research responsibilities.
He has also participated in or coordinated, also as Principal Investigator, different research projects or conventions financed by private or public institutions, such as “TREND” (VRT foundation, PI), “BETTER” (UNITN strategic project, PI), “NoiseFootprint” (HeadGenuit), “Study and mechanical characterization of FRCM systems applied on solid brick and tuff masonry” (BIEMME srl 2018), “Integration to the agreement aimed at the study and mechanical characterization of FRCM systems applied on solid brick and tuff masonry” (BIEMME srl 2018), “Scientific research concerning the assessment and drafting of guidelines for reducing the seismic risk of post-world war II school buildings” (Municipality of Senigallia) and the UNIVPM strategic project B.E.ST.Life.
At UNITN, he carries out teaching activities for the courses titled “Design and building construction” in the Bachelor’s degree of Civil Engineering, “Environmental Assessment of Constructions” in the MSc of Civil Engineering and “Architectural Technology 2 with Workshop” in the MSc of Building Engineering and Architecture. He carried out teaching activities at UNIVPM as the lecturer of the course titled “Methods for Sustainable Buildings” in the MSc Building Engineering-Architecture for the Academic Years (AY) 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 (SSD CEAR-08/A). Previously, he held teaching support assignments (Supporto alla Didattica) within the course titled “Historic Constructions and Retrofitting” (MSc Building Engineering-Architecture, AY 2017/2018 and 2018/2019, SSD CEAR-08/A). From 2014 to 2016 (3 years), he also tutored the MSc of Building Engineering and Architecture students. From 2017, he was the co-supervisor for over 20 theses in Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.
He has produced more than 60 research outputs, including 19 articles in international journals of high scientific qualification indexed by ISI / SCOPUS, 6 articles in national scientific journals, 1 book with an assigned ISBN and 1 book in international publisher accepted for publication. He also regularly acts as a reviewer and editorial board member for different international scientific journals.
Since 2021, he has been chair and member of the scientific and organizing committee of several international and national conferences and has participated as a speaker at several international and national scientific conferences.
